Reflecting on a Heartfelt Loss: Remembering Ashley Hooyberg

It is with heavy hearts that we reflect on the unfortunate passing of Ashley Hooyberg, a cherished member of our Ora gym community, who left us on April 19, 2023. Ash, as he was affectionately known, was a vibrant soul, always bringing positivity and energy to those around him. At the age of 29, his untimely departure marked a profound loss for us all, leaving our community in a state of disbelief. Ashley’s impact reached far beyond the gym, resonating with everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we look back on this somber anniversary, our thoughts and condolences continue to go out to his family and the broader community. The shock of his passing, which occurred just one year ago, remains palpable in our memories.

Ashley, a type 1 diabetic, tragically fell victim to a severe hypoglycemic event, a detail that emerged during the subsequent coronial process. Despite his overall fitness, health, and happiness, the challenges posed by type 1 diabetes became painfully evident. This serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of educating ourselves about this complex condition.

In the wake of this heartbreaking event, we urge everyone to take the time to understand and raise awareness about type 1 diabetes. As we reflect on the past year, let us honor Ashley’s memory by fostering a community that supports one another in health and wellness. Our hearts continue to ache for Ashley’s family, friends, and all those affected by this profound loss. If you find yourself in need of support or information, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

As we remember Ashley, let us collectively channel our thoughts into positive action, promoting education, awareness, and community strength. May his legacy inspire us to prioritize our health and well-being, fostering a lasting impact in his memory. As part of his legacy his family is raising money to kick-start a Peer Mentoring Pilot program for young people with type 1 diabetess living in Perth and the South-West.
